Can mold grow on glass

Table of Content [Hide]

The glass surface is flat and smooth, and many people did not expect it to mold. In fact, if storage and installation are not careful, mold can easily occur. Not only does it affect aesthetics, but it also affects the performance of glass.

Mold on glass is not the commonly understood type of mold, but there are also visible white mist or white spots:

When the mold area further spreads, rainbow spots will appear, and the glass surface has been eroded.

The occurrence of sulfur transformation and paper printing phenomenon, which develops into severe mold inside the glass, should be replaced for safety.

The reason of the glass appearing mold

Improper sealing can cause water vapor to accumulate when rainwater enters, and high temperatures and direct sunlight can easily cause problems.

Glass is mostly made of sodium calcium glass with quartz sand, soda ash, limestone, and feldspar as the main raw materials. During the annealing process of soda lime glass, alkali ions will move like the glass surface, making ion exchange easy on the glass surface. The glassy silica on the surface can be hydrolyzed.

When glass, such as Lanjing Glass, is stored in a humid environment, water or moisture will adsorb on the surface of the glass and gradually diffuse into the glass. When the soluble sodium silicate in the surface layer is hydrolyzed and then comes into contact with the carbonic acid formed by water and carbon dioxide, it will produce orthosilicic acid that is weaker in acidity than carbonic acid. If the saturated orthosilicic acid solution is kept for a long time, there will be amorphous silica precipitation, which is milky white in color and appears as colloidal particles, precipitates or gel

How to clean the mold on glass

Wipe the glass with hydrofluoric acid solution, which is highly corrosive. Remove mold on the glass and clean it with water after wiping. Pay attention to wearing masks and gloves for protection.

How to avoid mold on glass

    1. Glass should be stored indoors in a dry warehouse

    2. Open the packaging and install it in a timely manner to avoid long-term stacking of the entire frame

    3. When storing outdoors in rainy weather, pay attention to covering, rain and sun protection
